American Nudist Research Library

DEDICATED TO PRESERVING NUDIST HISTORY WITH
A COMPREHENSIVE ARCHIVE OF NUDIST MATERIAL

The American Nudist Research Library® (ANRL)was established in 1979 to preserve the history of the social nudist movement in North America and throughout the world.  It is a repository of material rather than a circulating library. Visitors may  read or view most of the collection as long as they are in the Library.  The Library is enjoyed most by individuals and groups who treasure on-going nudist activities,  and who wish to participate in a sincere effort to preserve the unique history of the movement.

A Long History of Skinny-Dipping

Despite its puritan roots, the U.S. has a long history of skinny-dipping. Social nudity is celebrated in the writings of Walt Whitman and the landscape paintings of Thomas Eakins. Benjamin Franklin took a daily naked "air bath," while presidents John Quincy Adams, Theodore Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson enjoyed a refreshing nude dip. According to National Geographic Magazine, John Quincy Adams (1825-29), the sixth President, customarily took a nude early morning swim in the Potomac River.
