How can you be in a 21st Century world and still wear silly hats and clothes because ancient scripture tell you to?

Or indeed any clothes when its warm! Evidence is a key point in arguments over atheism or other topics in the news. Show the evidence that there is a God then it would be important to take notice but as there is no such evidence we can remain confident about the lack of thunderbolts. But that reliance on evidence has some interesting consequences. For example, if a friend suggested spending the day at a nude beach, what would stop you?

To make the point as emphatic as possible, she has posted a nude photo for herself along with other nude images. In a Moslem state, this must count as very shocking indeed but it makes the point powerfully.

If you listened to some people or read some media reports, especially US based ones, you might think that being nude in public would cause alarm and distress and make the children frightened. Well it does nothing of the sort, nothing even remotely like it, in fact, judging by the huge number of people yesterday who watched the London World Naked Bike Ride, nudity in public should be actively encouraged. It generated smiles, encouragement, and wholehearted support.

A recent report that schools will be banning tight shorts for boys and short skirts for girls shows just what I mean.
The move is by well meaning people seeking to protect children from perverts but they have spectacularly missed the point, their action will not protect the children at all.

After years of caring for his Mum, the holiday brochures had at last come to life. The Mediterranean lapped at his rolled up trousers whilst he was surrounded by happy people, but it was hard to share their mood. Vera's death was no surprise. At 94 she had lived a long and fulfilled life and after all, hadn't the Doctor said that she died peacefully? No suffering, her body had simply given up. It was not her death that upset him so much as the number of people who came. Just a dozen in a church that size, a lifetime helping others, remembered by so few.

Research into attitudes in the Victorian era does not show agreement on the general state of prudery, rather it shows there was no universal set of attitudes held by "the Victorians". There are cases of extreme prudery to contrast with cases of openly lewd and lascivious behaviour, were the moral crusaders and the campaigners for a more broad-minded society. In a world without effective contraception and with a deal of ignorance about pregnancy in general, abstinence from sex makes sense, especially with the often crippling economic burden of too many children.

The story of how the Victorians modestly covered the legs of their pianos is a myth. Thomas Pyles' book Words and Ways of American English contains what is claimed to be the most likely explanation, that an English traveller by the name of Captain Frederick Marryat invented the story as a joke. He wrote it in his book, Diary in America. It is a wonderful story if you want to exaggerate the idea of Victorian prudery, especially US prudery.
